Crate Training Your Puppy Without the Stress

  • Crate training is normal and healthy

  • It’s not about “locking them up”—it’s about creating a safe space

Why Crate Training is Important

  • Helps with potty training

  • Keeps puppy safe when unsupervised

  • Creates a calm, secure space

  • Prevents destructive behavior

How to Set Up the Crate (before puppy comes home)

  • Proper crate size (not too big). The crate should be just big enough for the puppy to stand up, turn around, and lay down.

  • Soft bedding is a good idea but some puppies chew so at first I recommend a towel from your breeder or a blanket that smells like their littermates.

  • A safe chew toy or an age appropriate cognitive toy can be very helpful.

  • Crate placement (this can be near your bed the first few nights then once a good relationship with the crate is formed begin to move the crate to a special spot designated just for your puppies quiet place).

The First Night: What to Expect

  • Your puppy may cry (this is normal!)

  • They’ve never been alone before and have always been cuddled by their littermates so keep in mind that this takes some getting use to for all puppies.

  • Your puppy crying doesn’t mean there is something wrong. I like to wait for a moment they are calm in their crate and reward that behavior with a treat.

  • When you are crate training it can feel overwhelming so keep your plan simple.

    • Keep the crate near you at first

    • Take your puppy out for potty.

      • I always like to tell people to set themselves and the puppy up for success. No water or food a couple hours before bedtime and remember this for naps as well. if I have offered food or water and even if I haven’t, I like to take the puppy out for an opportunity to relieve themselves before they go into the crate.

    • YOU’VE GOT THIS! Stay calm and consistent and eventually, your puppy will find comfort in routine.

What Progress Actually Looks Like:

  • Set realistic expectations.

    • the first few nights is going to be an adjustment

    • within a week you should start to see some improvement

    • within a few weeks the puppy should be seeing comfort and routine.
